Circus reboot

NOT another boring Fringe circus act I hear you say, well Gasha is a fresh and arty take on the genre.

A vivid, sensual and chaotic vision of near-future Japan, bodies, cultures and aesthetics collide in a lively performance.

The production imagines a futuristic pleasure district—a labyrinth of neon haze, fragmented memories and digital noise.

Performers of diverse backgrounds enter this strange landscape.

• Gasha (above) and Primal (below) are a fresh take on the circus act.

As they gather, clash and intertwine, the stage shifts between seduction and danger.

Complementing the performers are digital projections and pulsing electronic sounds, creating a world where tradition is not preserved, but fractured and reassembled.

Aerials slice through beams of cold light, bodies spiral through fog and colour.

The cast deftly mix acrobatics and contemporary dance through a Japanese filter that makes the movement feel both ancient and futuristic.

Gasha, a new era of Japanese circus, is on until Sunday February 15 at the Ice Cream Factory in Perth as part of Fringe World.

Another interesting take on the traditional circus act is Primal.

It’s sexy, funny circus for grown-ups, featuring Australia’s most exciting circus and cabaret artists. Inspired by the raw energy of the animal kingdom and the complexities of human relationships, it explores identity, sexuality and perception.

With a mix of aerial tricks, fire performances, burlesque and song, the show delivers jaw-dropping acts with a cheeky twist.

Primal is at the Heath Ledger Theatre until February 1 as part of Fringe World. For more info see fringeworld.com.au.
