Fantasy fun

OVER-PRICED food, Cupid-themed cocktails, inflatable pink hearts.

If you’re sick of all the usual Valentine’s Day tropes, then try something a bit alternative for the mass-market abomination—go to a free, live Dungeons and Dragons show at Mojos Bar.

They’ll be lots of laughter and spontaneity as players take to the stage and embark on a “one-shot” D&D adventure.

Hosted by Quest Draft, Saturday’s campaign will have a sci-fi theme and is billed as A Mystery on the Edge of Space.

• Quest Draft’s D&D show A Mystery on the Edge of Space is at Mojos Bar in North Fremantle this Saturday afternoon.

“Our players will be in a story similar to something you might watch on Lost in Space, Stargate or Star Trek, only our players don’t have the script,” says Quest Draft’s Noah Diamond.

“They will be tasked with investigating a lost civilisation on the edge of the universe. Who were they? Why did they suddenly disappear overnight? “These are questions the ship’s crew will be trying to answer, but just because the galaxy seems deserted doesn’t mean our players will be free from danger.”

Quest Draft held a successful D&D show at Mojos in November, leading to a bi-monthly residency at the North Freo venue.

Diamond says he had been toying with the idea of a live D&D show for a while, before finally taking the plunge in the middle of 2025, holding his debut event at The Bird in Northbridge.

“Surprisingly, The Bird was fairly full and not just from our friends that frequent the venue,” he says.

“We loved that it brought many people with a shared interest together, and how much the audience loved speculating about what would happen next. To our shock, it was a success.

“Since then we’ve done another show at The Bird that was Western-themed, and then our first show at Mojos was a Scooby Doo-fantasy crossover/spoof.”

The hit TV series Stranger Things thrust Dungeons and Dragons back into the mainstream, but Diamond says streamed shows like Dimension 20 and Critical Roll are the real reason it’s become so popular in recent years.

“Both streaming shows play long form D&D over the course of seasons,” he says.

“The fan base is massive and growing all the time.

“To the point now that they sell out arenas when they perform live.”

Thankfully Diamond doesn’t have to sneak about his house in his wizard’s mantle and staff, as his wife shares his love of D&D.

“For the first show, my wife Alyssa Wingfield made a PowerPoint with helpful hints and rule explanations for any first-timers in the audience and ran the background music,” he says.

“My brother Isaac Diamond, his wife Erin Lockyear and our friend Jane Azopardi had a little experience with D&D, and agreed to be our players/performers.”

Quest Draft is not-for-profit and any funds are ploughed back into the show or given to performers.

Diamond says he is expecting lots of cosmic high-jinx at Saturday’s campaign: “The improvised nature of the show means it is always very fun and funny.”

A Mystery on the Edge of Space is at Mojos Bar, 237 Queen Victoria St, North Freo today (Saturday February 14) from 12:30pm-4pm. Entry is free. More details at mojosbar.com.au and instagram.com/quest_draft.
