FREMANTLE MP Simone McGurk has welcomed a new short film competition that zooms in on ageism.
The Revelation Perth International Film Festival has teamed up with the WA government to present the ‘Life in Pictures’ competition 2026.
Filmmakers of all ages and skill levels in WA can submit movies up to three minutes long that explore themes around positive ageing in the community, or the topic of ageism including stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination.
“The Life in Pictures short film competition is a fantastic initiative that challenges ageism and promotes age-friendly messages in our community,” says Ms McGurk, minister for Aged Care and Seniors.

Prejudices
“This is a great contribution to the campaign working to combat ageism and ensure all Western Australians live free from discrimination.
“It’s also a great way for budding filmmakers to get involved in one of Perth’s favourite film festivals and help start important conversations in our community.”
Revelation will hold free workshops in March, April and May across the Perth metro region to provide filmmaking tips for success in the competition, including Fremantle Library on March 18 and City of Vincent Library on April 4.
Schools, residential aged care, clubs and other groups, along with individuals and families are encouraged to enter.
“This initiative is one of my favourite things we’ve ever initiated with the Revelation event,” says Festival director, Richard Sowada.
“Providing the opportunity for the entire community to participate in such an important grass-roots discussion in such a creative way is something we’re very proud to be part of, and it has such a lasting effect.”
Entries are open until Friday June 19 for filmmakers in the following categories: 17 years old or under, 18-59 years old, 60 years old and over, and Ambassador’s Choice.
Five films from each category will be shortlisted and screened on the closing night of the Revelation Film Festival on July 19, which will include the announcement of category winners who’ll receive a $1000 cash prize. The screening will be followed by the festival’s famous closing night party.
