Ten artists, seven days, one wild horizon

TODAY (Saturday May 30) the individual work of 10 WA artists ‘working their magic’ over seven days at the same location, will be launched in Nyisztor Studio Fremantle.

This fascinating twist to artistic expression named Horizons, occurred at Cheyne’s Beach on the wild coast of WA’s Great Southern  late last year.

The brains-trust behind this challenging approach is Denmark artist Carley Le Cerf.

• A week on the wild coast has produced a striking new exhibition from 10 WA artists.

Her simple vision was to bring together artists whose work is “deeply connected to the natural world and immersed in landscape”.

Together, they camped in the wild, inspired each other and explored the nearby Waychinicup National Park.

The seven visual artists were given the same sized paper to produce five different artworks during their beachside residency, while two sound designers did their “own thing”.

Cheyne’s Beach, 65km west of Albany, while hugely inspiring, has an ugly history as the pre-curser to Australia’s last whaling station.

Whalers used it as a base from the 1840s and a station was opened in the 1950s before being relocated closer to Albany shortly after. It was closed down by the Fraser Liberal government in 1977 as the whaling population in Australia had been pushed to the edge of extinction.

Fremantle landscape painter Jacinda Bayne whose studio is at PS Art Space in Pakenham Street in Fremantle, eagerly took up the invitation, the area holding years of inspiration for many of her artworks.

“I have always felt very drawn to this place and it was a dream to go back with fellow artists to see how they would record this magical landscape,” Bayne said.

She described it as “just amazing” as all artists were on the same page with the project and the landscape.

• The Stirlings From the Hill by Anita Phillips

“I was able to get most of [my] five artworks finished out in the landscape in amongst the rain and mud.

“Even so, some my work still ended up in the ocean,” she laughed.

Horizons will be launched at Nyisztor Studio, 17 Essex Street, Fremantle today at 6.30pm. Most artists will likely be in attendance.
