Western Australia’s iconic Avon Descent returns on 8 and 9 August 2026, bringing two days of intense racing, festival crowds and whitewater action to the Avon and Swan rivers. Registrations are open, with competitors urged to secure their place.

Northam’s Avon Descent Association Chair Greg Kaeding said this year’s event will again send competitors charging from the Shire of Northam on Saturday 8 August to the finish line in the City of Bayswater on Sunday 9 August.

“The Avon Descent is second to none, and there are some real showstopper moments along the 124-kilometre course,” Mr Kaeding said.

“Last year’s event served up plenty of thrills and spills, even after an unseasonably dry lead-up to August.

“Across more than 50 years of Avon Descent history, we have tackled nearly every water level imaginable. That is what makes this a must-do, must-see event.”

For decades, thousands of competitors have tackled the Avon Descent’s 124-kilometre multisport whitewater challenge from Northam to Bayswater. Since 1973, the Avon Descent has cemented its place on WA’s sporting calendar, delivering unforgettable moments for competitors and spectators alike.

The 2026 Avon Descent weekend includes community festivals held by the Shire of Northam, City of Swan, City of Belmont and City of Bayswater. These events offer community connection and spectator viewing of the Avon Descent competitors.
