PEOPLE power has saved two large pine trees (“Deep roots,” Herald, June 27, 2026) which had been flagged for removal to upgrade a pedestrian crossing near South Beach.
In a project update for the Pedestrian Crossings – South Terrace and Duoro Rd Roundabout project on Wednesday, Freo council said publicity around the issue had “sparked a lot of conversation about tree retention, pedestrian and cyclist experiences, Main Roads guidelines, and driver behaviour in Fremantle.
“The community has clearly expressed that it does not support the removal of the Norfolk Island pine trees as part of the improvement work, which means the City will not proceed with removing these trees.”
The update said the City would continue to work with the community to improve the crossing.
