For more than 110 years, the Fremantle Workers Club has been one of the port city’s great gathering places. Born from the union movement in 1914, it has evolved from a meeting place for waterside workers into one of Fremantle’s most enduring homes of live music, dancing and community connection. Through changing fortunes, a remarkable revival and a move into its current home at the Fremantle Park Sports & Community Centre, the club has remained true to its founding purpose: bringing people together through shared experiences and a love of culture.
The latest chapter in that story began on 1 July, when the City of Fremantle assumed responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Park Centre. While the operational arrangements have changed, the Workers Club continues to operate independently, retaining exclusive use of its upstairs function space every Sunday for its well-patronised Sunday Dance events while continuing to present concerts and special events throughout the week. For members and visitors alike, it’s very much business as usual, with a full calendar of live entertainment continuing to showcase some of Western Australia’s finest performers.
One of those acts is Sign of Four, a remarkable ensemble that brings together some of WA’s most accomplished musicians. Blending strings, guitars, percussion and soaring vocal harmonies, the group effortlessly traverses jazz, folk, classical, Celtic and contemporary influences. With intricate arrangements, fearless improvisation and a musical chemistry, Sign of Four perfectly reflects the adventurous spirit that has long defined the Fremantle Workers Club. On 22 August, the addition of percussionist Joel Drieberg expands the group’s rhythmic palette while preserving the intimacy and spontaneity that define every performance.
To celebrate this exciting new era, we’re giving readers the chance to win tickets to see Sign of Four, plus selected upcoming Sunday Dance events along with the opportunity to experience one of Fremantle’s most treasured live music venues for themselves.
