EAST FREO is set to get its own farmers market, with the first East Fremantle Farmers Market scheduled for Locke Park on Saturday, November 7.

The market will run from 8am to noon on the first and third Saturday of each month during a summer trial, with organisers to review the arrangement after the season.

Market director Kylie Wheatley said the idea followed a difficult period for Freo Farmers Market, which was displaced from Bruce Lee Reserve for 10 weeks last year because of a sewerage spill.

Ms Wheatley took the market to temporary locations including Fremantle Arts Centre and Frank Gibson Park, where she said locals repeatedly asked for a permanent second market.

A pop-up market at Leighton followed, before East Fremantle mayor Tony Natale suggested Locke Park as a possible site.

“Weekends are for community, local food and connection,” Ms Wheatley said.

“As we look towards a future that has to wrangle with rising mental health struggles and loneliness, the simple joy and hope that a farmers market brings is more important than ever.”

The market will feature local produce, food, drinks and handmade goods.

The East Fremantle market will also include children’s activities and be plastic-free, following the approach used at Freo Farmers Market.
