Spooky tunes

HALLOWEEN’S ghosts, ghouls and haunted houses are getting a classical soundtrack when thousands of candles illuminate Perth Town Hall for a night of spooky tunes.

A Haunted Evening of Halloween Classics will bring a string quartet to the historic venue on October 29 for a programme mixing classical works with music from film, television and popular culture.

Among the selections will be Michael Jackson’s Thriller, Bernard Herrmann’s Psycho, the theme from Stranger Things and music from The Nightmare Before Christmas.

They will be joined by two darker classical favourites: Saint-Saëns’ Danse Macabre and Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain.

The latter is perhaps the most appropriate choice for Halloween.

Mussorgsky’s work was inspired by Slavic folklore about supernatural gatherings on a mountain, with witches and spirits gathering for a night of increasingly wild celebration before the sound of church bells announces dawn.

The piece was later immortalised in Disney’s Fantasia, where the demonic Chernabog summons ghosts and spirits before dawn brings the supernatural party to an abrupt end.

For the Perth performance, the dark orchestral drama will be stripped back to a string quartet and performed beneath thousands of candles.
