Square global design search

Fremantle city council has challenged architects worldwide to design a major chunk of the $220 million Kings Square project.

As the Herald flagged back in February, the council has decided to launch an international competition to get global ideas for a proposed new library, visitor centre, civic centre and administration building.

Stage one closes September 10. The design competition is the biggest of its kind in WA since the State Theatre in 2005, which—as it happens—was awarded to Fremantle firm Kerry Hill.

Mayor Brad Pettitt says it is the start of “what promises to be Fremantle’s most important new development in a generation”.

“The Kings Square project is the cornerstone of Fremantle’s revitalisation and as such, deserves the best possible design to ensure it meets the needs and and high expectations of our community”.

“We have an independent expert jury to assess the designs and I’m sure the final design will be something we will all be proud of.

“I’m confident the Kings Square development will signal the renaissance of Fremantle and will become our city’s future heritage.”
