Willagee cutie

THERE has to be some sort of governmental irony in naming a suburb after a long-since reclaimed swamp the local Noongar people called Willagee.

In the 1950s the suburb was part of the City of Fremantle and low-cost housing was built for people working in the new industrial area nearby.

A number were prefab dwellings imported from Austria, giving the suburb its characteristic demountable, timber-frame cottage style.

Which makes this Jagoe Loop home unusual because it’s an older home built from bricks.

The cute two-bedroom abode is just right for a young couple wanting to break into the market, or retirees looking for something smaller once the kids have flown the nest.

A recent renovation has whipped the home into a pristine dwelling, with high ceilings, were crisp white walls contrast with rich, chocolate jarrah floors.

What looks like an original frosted glass front door takes you straight into the semi-open living room, with its gas fireplace for instant toasty warmth.

The kitchen is compact, but not squeezy with plenty of white bench tops and soft close drawers.

The bedrooms are double, one overlooking the private front garden.

When it comes to alfresco dining, there’s a covered patio at the rear of the subdivided block, or a private grassed courtyard at the front.

The local primary school, shopping centre and community centre are just up the road, and Fremantle is a 10-minute drive away.
