Find out the facts about this deadly disease and learn how you can protect your cat
Feline AIDS is caused by the Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). FIV is a potentially fatal viral disease that interferes with the immune system of a cat. Healthy cats contract the infection when bitten by an infected cat. Cats infected with FIV may remain healthy for a number of years, showing no signs of disease, while others may display initial symptoms. Eventually the immune system becomes too weak to fight off other infections or diseases and as a result, FIV progresses to Feline AIDS. Outdoor cats are at higher risk of contracting the disease. And with an estimated 29% of cats testing positive in Western Australia – the highest in Australia, it’s important to know the signs and symptoms so you can keep your feline friend safe.
FIV is spread from cat to cat primarily through bite wounds, the virus being shed in high levels through saliva. It is unlikely the disease is spread through grooming or sharing water bowls. Initial symptoms include fever, loss of appetite, diarrhoea, lethargy and swollen lymph nodes.
As the disease progresses, symptoms may occur such as weight loss, sores in and around the mouth, eye lesions, chronic infections, poor coat and certain types of cancers.
Currently there is no treatment or cure for an infected cat. However a vaccine is available that can help prevent infection with FIV. Cats 8 weeks or older require 3 initial vaccinations 2-4 weeks apart, then once a year for life. Along with vaccination, other things you can do are:
Limit exposure of indoor cats to outdoor cats
Use caution when introducing a new cat to a multi-cat household
Have a new cat tested prior to joining the household
Isolating an aggressive cat from other cats
Until the end of March 2016, Hilton Vet Hospital has some fantastic offers on discounted FIV tests and vaccinations.
