Grand Freo hotel reopens with new lease on life
Boasting a long and rich history, one of Fremantle’s oldest and grandest establishments is slowly but surely coming back to life. First opening its doors in 1887, the Federal Hotel was built by Mr James Herbert Jr. It was touted in the press at the time as one of the most ambitious projects seen in the colony of Fremantle, built of local stone and bricks, with stained glass work by Messrs Barnett Bros.
The State Heritage Office describes it as “Very significant historically as a hotel built in Fremantle during the gold boom period and still used for its original purpose. The place is a fine example of a Victorian Free Classical building, with elaborate stucco decoration above the ground floor level, that makes a significant contribution to the streetscape.”

The hotel has undergone many changes over the years and up until recently was known as Rosie O’Grady’s Irish-themed pub. New Operator Nikola Jurin and Operations Manager Marc Townsend jumped at the chance to own this substantial piece of Freo history and relish the opportunity to restore this grand dame to her former glory for all to enjoy. Experienced hoteliers, Nikola is also the guy behind the popular South Beach Hotel.
“We believe the heritage and architecture of Fremantle makes the city unique from the rest of the metropolitan area, and it’s our desire to showcase this beautiful venue once again,” said Marc.

“We have undergone a quick refurbishment of the main bar area and re opened to the public in this area only. It is our plan to continue perfecting this space. Over the coming year we will be undertaking rolling renovations of the entire pub, including the accommodation and function rooms. The next phase of the project is to renovate the upstairs balcony and adjoining area into a cocktail, spirit and wine bar,” he added.
The Federal Hotel will be a modern style Australian gastro pub set in a stunning heritage site. The space is bright and open with many different areas from which you can choose to drink and dine. The kitchen is focused on a menu centred on contemporary Australian pub food, with inspiration taken from the flavours of Asia. There is a well thought out share section, burgers, mains and salads, plus a kids menu to keep the little ones happy.

The beverage offering from the beer taps is unique but approachable, including a small craft beer bar with rotating guest producers. The Federal’s bottled beer range is also craft-based. The wine list is based around West Australian and Australian producers with a small amount of international wines available both by the glass and bottle.
