Fusions
Established since 1958, independent public school Applecross Senior High School has maintained a reputation for high academic, sporting and cultural achievements. Strong and positive interpersonal relationships founded on trust and shared responsibility are encouraged. The school believes the best learning occurs when teachers, students and parents work in partnership with common goals and mutual respect. It is expected that each individual will make a positive contribution to the school community. Applecross High celebrates its diversity, with approximately 50% of students having non-European backgrounds.
There are several specialised programs on offer, such as the Gifted and Talented Visual Art Program, the Specialist Tennis Program and the Academic Extension Program. Recently, year 11 Gifted and Talented Visual Art students from teacher Jodine McBride’s class demonstrated their fine painting skills in a project exploring the landscape of Australia. Each student created an art piece vibrant with colour and energy. These paintings were then taken to an OOTA poetry class run by Shane McCauley at the Fremantle Arts Centre, where the poets were asked to respond to the paintings using Ekphrastic writing.
Ekphrastic writing is a response to a visual stimulus. It is used to explore the symbolism of one art form by means of a separate medium. The result has been collated into a printed text entitled Fusions, which brings together two communities and two styles of creativity. This text is available for purchase through the art department at Applecross Senior High School.
Come and see the new school campus at the Open Day on Wednesday 4th May.
