FORMER wharfie Chris Brown has almost unanimous support from Labor’s left factions and is now a shoe-in to win preselection for the Federal seat of Fremantle.
On Thursday evening the faction voted 76 – 5 to support the maritime union candidate in favour of Fremantle deputy mayor Josh Wilson.
Cr Wilson’s preselection hopes rested largely on gaining the support of the powerful United Voice union, but it swung in behind Mr Brown.
There were signs earlier in the week that Mr Brown’s campaign was gaining momentum. Former metal workers’ union organiser and now Cockburn MLA Fran Cockburn contacted the Herald to offer his endorsement.
“I have worked with Chris on industrial and political campaigns and know his commitment to hard work and his genuine passion to fight for people’s rights and a fair go,” Mr Logan said.
The local ALP branch is due to vote this weekend, and a Brown supporter predicted it would be a lot closer than many were predicting.
The party’s state executive meets Monday.

What a disgrace. I come from a UK Northern background with coal miners and iron foundry workers in my family. No problem with unions but they can’t do this sort of thing. Voting Green.
