Fremantle state Labor MP Simone McGurk teamed up with local councillors Hannah Fitzhardinge, Ingrid Waltham and Rachel Pemberton to celebrate Freo securing $175,000 from the McGowan government this week to improve the city’s bike network.

The council will match the grant and use the money to upgrade the intersection of Parry, Adelaide and Queen Victoria Streets. The intersection will get “head start” zones for cyclists, and clearer demarcation of cycle and vehicle lanes.

Pedestrians swill also get pram ramps and button-controlled crossing lights. “Fremantle is on its way to becoming one of Australia’s most bike-friendly cities so we thank the state government for including us in the latest round of Perth Bicycle Network funding,” says mayor Brad Pettitt. Ms McGurk says with more people moving into the area, it was important to upgrade the dangerous intersection.
