Wrecked heritage

THE wrecking ball is mightier than the pen.

For eight years Fremantle council’s being sitting on a recommendation to remove 8 Douglas Street from its heritage register, but owner Carlo Maliavaz is likely to beat them to the punch and have the place demolished.

• Nice potplants can’t hide the fact this home didn’t deserve its place on Freo’s heritage register. It’s facing the wrecker’s ball.

Somehow the single storey, rendered masonry cottage sneaked onto the register’s lowest category, but a review in 2010 couldn’t even tell if it was the original house because there’d been so many alterations.

The reviewer recommended it be removed from the register, but no one’s done anything about that.

Mr Maliavaz this week got his application to demolish the place through the council’s planning committee, despite a couple of neighbours complaining that without plans for a replacement, they were worried about an unsightly vacant block blighting the street.
