THE Port boys have started the WA Premier Cricket league with a strong beginning, winning 2 from 2.
National team players Shaun Marsh and Ashton Turner, along with WA openers Sam Whiteman and Jake Carder, also joined the Fremantle Districts Cricket Club in their opening game of the premier season down at Stevens Reserve.
Club president David Davenport said it was good to see all the boys back on home soil.
“Last Saturday, for the first time in well over a decade we have had all home-grown players in our premier game – they all came through our juniors at Stevens Reserve.”
Fremantle won exciting and tense 50-over games against Scarborough and University, with Carder as captain winning the WACA player of the round with 120 runs and 3 wickets in one and top scoring with a 50 in another game.
Mr Davenport said it was always exciting when the team was up against University.
“Last time we played them at the WACA was in the State 20/20 final, which was a nail biter.”
Mr Davenport said grounds curator Pepi Camponovo had kept the pitches and outfield in superb condition over winter, making for great cricket now the warm weather’s kicking in.
Fremantle has also welcomed back Scorchers and Australian player Jhye Richardson from injury, playing his first game back last weekend as a specialty batsman after recent surgery.
