If you’d love to be eating Mexican street food in Mumbai right now, achieving your foodie travel dream may prove a little diffi  cult in this COVID-19 age.

But do not fear, your day will likely come, but in the meantime you can enjoy these complex, fused fl avours and awaken your taste buds at Funkee Monkee in Fremantle, every day of the week.

Mexican street food in Mumbai? Yes.

Mexican with Indian fl avours? It’s a thing.

A big thing. And it’s good. Indian and Mexican foods actually have a lot in common in taste and texture – their bountiful balance of protein and carbs, and, of course, their kicks of chilli and spice – and Funkee Monkee’s fusion with a modern twist is defi nitely all things nice.

The space is a dream, a cool café during the day, and a hip wine and tapas style bar in the evenings, with four diverse indoor and outdoor spaces for you to enjoy or book for your next function, event, workshop, group or business meeting.

At the Monkee, the motto is eat, drink, chill, and the vibe is certainly “Funkee”.

Tucked away in an old converted warehouse at 8 James Street, near the Fremantle Arts and Recreation centres, Funkee Monkee off ers a truly unique experience.

A former mechanics workshop and ceramics factory, it’s nestled well away from the hustle and bustle of the inner city and the busy street, it off ers plenty of free parking, and has two great alfresco areas (think secret garden), and two diverse indoor spaces adorned with local street art.

It’s certainly worth heading to outer Fremantle for.

The staff at Funkee Monkee are super friendly and it is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day of the week (the menus run all day).

It’s famous for its daily $12 gin spritzes and 5-6pm happy hours, Monday platters, Tuesday naan pizzas, Wednesday wings and beer, Thursday ladies nights, and weekend bottomless brunches.

The music is on point for easy listening on weekends whether its their DJs or live performers.

The team at Funkee love supporting local musos with an exciting 2021 line up coming up.

On any day of the week, you can have a locally-roasted coff ee infused with almond saff ron and cardamom, or their authentic own blend of tumeric latte and masala chai with syrup made in-house from Indian tea leaves, after a swim at the Rec Centre, hold a work or group meeting day or night, or catch up for quality drinks with friends.

The bar is spectacular with such a huge variety on off er including their very own Funkee Draught  – described as a cross between a lager and a summer ale, infused with passionfruit, a range of wines and decadent cocktails (in bowls if you want them), aperitifs, after dark favourites, and, of course, a wide range of quality tequilas and mezcals.

Funkee Monkee’s modern blend of Mexican-Mumbai street food and great range (including vegan, vegetarian, burgers, tacos, breakfasts, naan pizzas, desserts and kids plates) will suit a wide range of palates and fussy eaters.

“Diversitee” is “kee” at the Monkee – if you catch my drift, and the great reviews speak for themselves.

So don’t “Monkee” around – just head on down.
