REVISE WA: A lifesaver in need of new volunteers

A Herald and Perth Voice promotional feature

For more than 30 years, REVISE WA Inc has supported education in remote communities. Now an independent incorporated body, it continues to assist the Isolated Children’s Parents’ Association (ICPA) in ensuring children in isolated areas can access quality learning.

Established in 1992, REVISE WA provides volunteer tutors — often retired teachers — to help families supervising lessons through SIDE and regional Schools of the Air. During busy periods, illness or times of pressure, tutors are placed for around four weeks to keep children’s education on track.

Each year, 10–15 tutors assist WA families. Community donations and contributions help keep this vital service operating.

REVISE WA has been a lifesaver and a game changer for our remote outback lives. As someone who has relied on this remarkable organisation for several years, I can personally vouch for the invaluable support it provides.

Before the arrival of my fourth child in 2023, I knew the demands of teaching three children in our home schoolroom, alongside caring for a newborn, would stretch me too thin. Applying to REVISE WA was one of the best decisions I’ve made. I was quickly contacted by coordinator Sue Potter, and soon after, our first REVISE teachers arrived.

Michelle Burrows, an experienced primary school teacher, and her husband Bill joined us just a week after my youngest daughter was born. Despite the busy and sleep-deprived chaos of our household, Michelle swiftly established a structured and effective routine for my three children. Bill, a retired diesel mechanic, helped my husband with everything from fixing pumps to moving machinery. Their practical support and warm presence lifted a huge weight from our shoulders.

Later that year, Chris Cairns brought her 31 years of teaching experience — and her infectious enthusiasm — into our home. She refined our timetable, strengthened the children’s literacy and numeracy skills, and inspired wonderful creativity in their artwork. Both Michelle and Chris went above and beyond, even helping with everyday tasks around the house.

The benefits to my children were clear: improved reading confidence, stronger maths skills, and valuable problem-solving strategies. Just as importantly, they gained from having other capable adults reinforce learning and manners.

In its 34th year, REVISE WA remains a vital part of the outback landscape. It restores balance for remote families juggling business, community commitments, and education.

We are deeply grateful for the knowledge, support and friendship REVISE brings to our busy lives.
