Community invited to help uncover 100 years of stories from Fremantle’s iconic A Shed
This year marks 100 years since the reconstruction of Fremantle’s iconic A Shed, a building that has stood at the heart of the waterfront through generations of change.
Originally rebuilt in 1926 to support the growing demands of Fremantle Port, A Shed played a vital role in the working life of the harbour. Decades later, it found new life as a vibrant arts and cultural venue, hosting exhibitions, performances and community gatherings throughout the late 1980s and beyond. In 2021, the doors reopened once more as Gage Roads Freo, welcoming a new generation of locals and visitors to enjoy the historic space.

To celebrate this milestone, Gage’s 100 Years of A Shed campaign is calling on the community to share the memories, photographs and stories that have shaped the building’s rich history.
The photograph pictured here was taken on opening night of the arts venue in 1988. Perhaps you’re in the crowd. Maybe you worked on the wharf, attended a performance, celebrated a special occasion, or simply have a story that’s been passed down through your family.
Whatever your connection, it’s part of A Shed’s story.
Over the coming month, community submissions will help bring the building’s history to life, capturing the people, moments and memories that have made A Shed such an enduring part of Fremantle’s identity.
As a thank you, everyone who shares a story, photograph or memorabilia Gage Roads Freo is hosting a portside sundowner, where contributors will be invited to come together to raise a glass and celebrate a century of stories on the waterfront.
Anyone with a connection to A Shed is encouraged to come forward and share their memories as part of the 100 Years of A Shed celebration.
Got a story to tell? We’d love to hear it.
