Conference scholarships

THE Literature Centre has announced the line-up of authors for its seventh Celebrate Reading Conference.

Although the conference isn’t until later this year, the authors were announced to tie in with the launch of a new scholarship which will allow English teachers early in their career to attend.

“Since our inaugural Celebrate Reading conference in 2012, this event has become the most sought after invitation for Australian authors and illustrators of children’s and young adult books,” says centre director Lesley Reece.

The focus this year is young adult literature.

Authors include WA’s Brendan Ritchie, and a bunch of eastern staters including Fiona Wood, Cath Crowley, Will Kostakis, Claire Zorn and Jared Thomas.

“They are authors who respect young adults, giving them gutsy and non-patronising books that present significant issues within the context of superb characterisation and story-telling,” says Ms Reece.

The conference will be at the heritage-listed Fremantle Prison on October 26 and 27.
